Maxwell Systems Releases Quest Earthwork 7.0

New Trench Features Bring Benefits of Multiple Programs Into One

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.—September 19, 2007—Maxwell Systems, Inc. today announced Maxwell Systems™ Quest Earthwork™ 7.0, the latest release of its powerful earth measuring software. This release of Maxwell Systems’ cut and fill program contains a significant number of new features and enhancements, including the incorporation of new trench features for enhanced viewing capabilities.

“Quest Earthwork 7.0 gives contractors more control over how they view and read plans,” says Jim Flynn, president and CEO of Maxwell Systems. “The new trench capabilities, among others, reinforce our commitment to our customers, and to remaining at the forefront of industry innovation.”

Estimators previously had to open a separate program (Maxwell Systems™ Quest Trenchwork™) for any profile view of trenchwork features. Now, with Quest Earthwork 7.0, they can access the self-contained application for a complete plan view takeoff. Plan view is easier for estimators to read, and gives them a better overall view of the worksite for total control with each job.

Other new Quest Earthwork 7.0 features include Linear Foot takeoff for items like pipe, fencing, and curbs, as well as Count Item takeoff capabilities for manholes, catch basins, and other items. The program also includes a new Trench Templates feature, which incorporates Vertical, V-shape, T-shape, Y-shape, and more.

In addition, estimators can create their own trench templates as needed, and save them for future jobs with similar structures. All of these features enable the estimators to view cut and fill totals on a single summary screen, saving them the time of switching between two programs, and helping them work more efficiently.

Quest Earthwork 7.0’s 3-D, Cross Section, and Grid Views all now incorporate trenching, too. In addition, the Summary View totals trench excavation, backfill, and bedding material. This will better help contractors determine their costs, and create an accurate bid from the start.

Overall, Quest Earthwork 7.0 helps contractors measure cut and fill quantities in record time, and instantly get access to site information that manual methods cannot provide. Takeoff simply requires tracing over plans using a stylus pen, first for existing elevations and then for proposed elevations, to generate accurate cut and fill quantities.

The program can also import AutoCAD files, saving the estimator the task of digitizing the plans. Quest Earthwork 7.0 can handle multiple sheets, and works with any known scale in Imperial or metric units.

“Adding trenching takeoff capabilities to Quest Earthwork has made it more convenient, by eliminating an extra step in completing the takeoff process,” says Quest Earthwork user Chris Hawkins, vice president of Hawkins Brothers Utilities, Inc. “With this feature I’m able to perform takeoffs more quickly, and create an attractive presentation by consolidating reports. Overall, this new version has made it easier and faster to perform takeoffs.”

Quest Earthwork 7.0 is now available. New customers interested in more information about the product should call 1-800-688-8226, or visit www.maxwellsystems.com.

The Bid-to-Cash Cycle Explained

Managing each of the key process areas of a construction business – Estimating, Construction Accounting, and Project Management – requires vastly different talents and areas of expertise. The reality is that each of these functional groups is related and dependent on one another.

For your organization to run in an optimal fashion, the groups much work together in an optimal fashion. Together, these functional areas compromise what we describe as the Bid-to-Cash Cycle. And our goal at Maxwell Systems is to provide software for construction so you can bridge the needs of the functional groups, better manage this cycle, and so maximize profitability.

When construction estimating software, construction accounting software, and construction project management software are working together in a seamless system as a complete construction business management software solution, then a contractor is truly poised for optimal profit and productivity.

How does a complete solution fit your part of the cycle? Here are a few examples:

  • Owner: It's all about reducing waste, uncovering lost opportunity, exposing shortcomings, and maximizing resources – all which impact profit and the bottom line. With end-to-end visibility of every project, executives can hone business strategy, improve control of cash flow, and keep financials in the black with accurate ROI.
  • Estimator: Beyond estimating projects, the estimator can access more accurate information in regards to how the project actually performs. This will allow the estimator to improve accuracy on future estimates with actual labor and production rates, updated material prices, and other resource related items.
  • Accounting: Not only a company's construction accounting system, a complete solution helps to streamline the procurement processes for optimal efficiencies and produces more accurate purchasing processes. Additionally, billing processes, inventory issuances, and many other processes are streamlined. Less data entry, better accuracy, and reliable audit trail allow convenience and peace of mind.
  • Project Manager: The seamless workflow from Estimating to Project Tracking allows for a streamlined method of creating the job and then tracking performance against the estimate. Within the complete solution, the construction project management programs also provide the detail required for the Project Manager to understand what the Estimator was thinking when the bid was put together. Plus, by accessing real-time information whether in the office or in the field, the project manager can track progress, be more agile, and better handle all aspects of jobs from beginning to end.

Bottom Line

To succeed in today's competitive marketplace, construction business owners must improve productivity and have end-to-end visibility to see how jobs perform (and turn profit) from start to finish. Maxwell Systems knows construction company software and can be your partner by offering truly unique products (as well as support and services) that address the entire construction project lifecycle – from digital takeoff through final cash payment.
